Sam Altman's Eye-Scanning Orb Has a New Look--and Will Come Right to Your Door

WIRED

Last year, a foundation called Tools for Humanity went on tour to show off its eye-scanning Orb. The metallic globe--an actual, physical orb--was one part of a process where citizens would someday use their biometric information to verify their humanity. The project, called Worldcoin, might have been written off as another techno-utopian project bound to fail had it not had one name attached to it: Sam Altman, the cofounder and CEO of OpenAI, one of the most dramatic tech companies of the modern era. An inkling of Worldcoin began in 2019 when Altman began exploring identity verification that could be used in universal basic income schemes. He teamed up with technologist Alex Blania to turn the idea into a reality.

The Apple Watch Series 10 Has a Whole New Look

WIRED

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch, the top-selling rectangular wearable that can be seen on the wrists of millions of iPhone owners. As befits a landmark anniversary, this year's flagship Apple Watch 10 has gotten an updated design that is much thinner and lighter than the previous Watch Series 9, along with a new, jet black finish. Every year, Apple adds new health features to the watch. This year, that feature is sleep apnea detection. The most highly anticipated health feature was tracking for hypertension, or high blood pressure, and that has not shown up on the Apple Watch yet--probably because earlier this year, Apple was ordered to stop selling watches with blood oxygen sensing because of a patent dispute with Masimo Corp.

Kim Jong Un's Hollywood makeover highlights new propaganda push

The Japan Times

When the going gets tough for Kim Jong Un, his regime likes to turn its TV cameras on the military, with glossy productions showcasing the missiles and manpower that North Korea tells the masses are protecting the nation. Since taking power a decade ago, Kim has brought new looks to state television, including drone footage, computer graphics, music video-style cuts and made-for-TV moments. This has helped him rally support for the state as it battles chronic food shortages and an anemic economy made even weaker by international sanctions imposed as punishment for testing nuclear bombs and missiles, some potentially capable of striking the U.S. and its allies. In his most recent state TV spectacle, for a weapons test on March 24, Kim is seen in dark sunglasses and a black leather jacket apparently ordering his army -- in slow motion -- to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile. This was released eight days after a failed ballistic missile launch near Pyongyang's international airport.

Vizio adds voice control and a new look for its M- and P-Series TVs

Engadget

With Vizio's 2022 series of TVs, it's releasing an updated version of the SmartCast platform with a redesigned guide that helps you navigate the free, ad-supported content that is such a key part of its business model. It's also launching Vizio Voice, which provides natural language search and control of the TV and its apps, whether you're using the accompanying Bluetooth-connected remote or the Vizio SmartCast Mobile app on your phone. As usual, SmartCast also includes streaming via Google Cast or Apple AirPlay 2, and Vizio says the latest version will be available on its 2021 and 2022 model TVs. The voice remote comes with new V-Series TVs and higher. Other than their gaming features, one thing buyers of Vizio's higher-end sets may appreciate is a redesigned stand.

Hey Siri, are you really '20x' more on top of it this year? Apple personal assistant getting new look in iOS 14

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Apple will stage its traditional post-Labor Day product reveal on Tuesday, where it is expected to tout new editions of the Apple Watch and iPad. Along the way, there will be new things for Siri to do as well on the iPad, as part of the iOS mobile operating system upgrade. Siri is the oft-maligned but heavily used personal assistant. This year, Siri will tout a "completely new look," with "over 20x more facts than just three years ago." Yes, Apple actually says this, on the promo page for the iOS 14 upgrade, which has traditionally been made available in September.

Reolink Argus 3 security camera review: New look, same great performance

PCWorld

Reolink found a good niche with its first Argus, a truly wireless home security camera with just the essential features. Now on its third iteration, the camera has a new look and some smart additions, including an integrated spotlight and color night vision. Even better, Reolink has introduced these new twists without mucking with the camera's easy operation and simple feature set. With its modular size, white enclosure, and black face, the redesigned Reolink 3 resembles a more squat Arlo Pro 3. On the front are a status LED, a 230-lumen spotlight (something else it shares with the Arlo Pro 3), six infrared LEDs for night vision, a fixed focal length lens with a 120-degree field of view, daylight sensor, microphone, and a passive-infrared (PIR) sensor for motion detection. On the back are a battery status LED, micro-USB port, and speaker.

London Fashion Week: Make the most of visual merchandising

#artificialintelligence

It won't be long before the globe's biggest fashionistas are back in town to hit the catwalks of London Fashion Week. With over 5,000 industry press and buyers likely to attend, and hundreds of luxury labels showing their wares, it's a major event not only for industry insiders, but for shoppers and fashion lovers alike. Orders placed during the week alone often exceed ยฃ100 million as consumers get inspired to experiment with fresh new looks which emerge during the shows. This offers a massive opportunity for both luxury and fast-fashion retailers when it comes to increasing sales. But making the most of it demands a carefully executed strategy which combines the best of both technological innovation and creative control.

Parted Your Hair A Different Way? Your Device Might Not Unlock

WSJ.com: WSJD - Technology

"The computer was like: 'Oh my God, girl. You got to go back and fix yourself up. You're looking bad,' " recalls Ms. Cummings, 72 years old, of Fryeburg, Maine. "When I get up in the morning, I know I look bad, but I don't want the computer telling me that." The rise of facial-recognition technology such as Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Hello and Apple Inc.'s Face ID means computers now seem to be passing judgment on users' appearances.

This message will self-destruct: Gmail adds confidential mode and new AI

The Guardian

Google is implementing the biggest overhaul of its popular Gmail webmail service in five years, bringing a new look, advanced AI-powered features and improved privacy. Two years in the making, the redesign is intended to help Google better compete with Microsoft's Outlook on the business side and modernise consumer email by bringing features from its Inbox email client into the main Gmail experience. "This is an entire rewrite of our flagship, most-used product," said Jacob Bank, product manager lead for Gmail, which 1.4 billion people use each month. For consumers, headline features include the ability to snooze emails, as you would with an alarm clock, until a specified time or date, and what Google calls "nudge", which displays messages with quick reminders that you haven't responded to certain messages so that "nothing slips through the cracks". The smart reply feature, found within Google's Gmail app on smartphones that suggests quick reply phrases based on the content of the email, will also be rolled out to the web.
